About Berkvens

Berkvens is a medium-sized production company with 450 employees, based in Someren, the Netherlands. Berkvens designs, develops and produces interior door systems. Founded in 1933, and currently run by the third generation of the family, and with the fourth generation having recently started as well, the company is a true family business.

Today there are 4 state-of-the-art factories in which continuous investments are made. Innovation, development and growth are in the company's DNA. The production process is characterised by a high degree of automation. The production of HPL doors for non-residential construction, designer doors for residential construction, steel frames and timber frames has completed the range and enable the company to serve all market segments.

About Berkvens

Berkvens' history is the tale of a successful Dutch family business. When the family business was established in 1933, enterprising carpenter Piet Berkvens laid a solid foundation for today's company. After already developing, among other things, the honeycomb-core door with a heavy cardboard interior, he went on to design a process for the industrial production of doors that was completely new at that time. This proved to be a particularly successful innovation that Berkvens introduced in other countries in 1958 and that is still used all over the world today.

The passion for doors set a trend for constant product renewal, professionalism, production efficiency and a continually growing assortment. In 1960, internationalistation started with sales in Germany, France and Belgium.

In 1978, Iron van Dooren took over control of the company from his father-in-law Piet Berkvens. Professional expertise, optimal delivery process and an innovative capability were keywords during his time at the helm of the company. Under his leadership, the production of Berkvens doors and frames was consolidated under one roof in 1982. Steel frames, hinges and locks were added to the assortment, which made Berkvens' total solution a fact.

From this time on, growth was driven through continued product renewal and quality control, coupled with expansion and acquisition. In 1997, Ralph van Dooren took control of the company. Since then, he has ensured autonomous growth and also made a number of acquisitions that have made Berkvens a leading player in Europe.

Innovation, investment and quality

At Berkvens, we have achieved our position as a leading supplier to the construction industry by listening to our partners at every level. We learn what specifiers need, we find out what building contractors look for in our doors and frames, and we gain insights into how end users interface with our products. And it is this that has led to the development of scalable solutions that can be implemented on an international basis.

We combine this open, listening approach with continuous investment in product development, and the optimisation of internal processes. We apply the same goals in our modern production plants - improved process control, reduced failure costs and increased efficiency - as those we bring to our customers' projects.

Over the last 10 years we have invested more than €25 million in our production facilities and machinery, and have achieved quality assurance certification to ISO 9001 and 14001, KOMO and CTBA standards.

Focus on sustainability

For us, sustainability is a natural and obvious path to follow. Berkvens was the first European manufacturer to market an FSC®-certified flat, coated door and we continue to commit substantial investments to making our products sustainable in terms of their lifespan and eco-friendliness. Today, virtually all Berkvens products have the FSC (mix) label.

With our own composite Fitec material, an environmentally friendly substitute for hardwood consisting of various layers of fire and moisture resistant material, almost all our fire resistant doors are FSC compliant.

Fitec is a unique substitute material for hardwood framework, resulting in a significantly more environmentally friendly door. It is a composite sheet material, developed in-house for use in fire resistant doors. Doors with Fitec are mixed label FSC (70%). Fitec consists of various layers of fire resistant and moisture proof material. In this process, a patented dehydrated expansion compound is applied between layers. This compound links the different layers and, in the event of fire, it rapidly expands under pressure to provide an effective seal between the door and the frame.

Sustainability is also a key focus of our production processes and, in this respect too, we aim to meet the requirements of leading systems.
